So the moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived! Alternative Break Project 2012 is here and promises to be an exciting adventure for all participants. This is my first alternative break so I am personally pumped about getting hands on at KIPP Spark Academy here in Newark by painting a mural that is set to inspire all students. I have an education background so I am also looking forward to getting back into the classroom and seeing how KIPP schools run and operate (which we’ll be doing tomorrow). All signs so far point to a successful week!

Today started out very well with Brothers arriving from all over the country fueled with the passion to make a difference here in Newark. After some light mingling, we began tonight with a play-dough exercise that molded our dreams for the project into one, and set a clear vision on what we want to see accomplished. Some of those dreams included providing a positive outlook for our team as well as the students, making a connection with the school and helping them see that they can overcome any challenges that may lie ahead. Mail was read aloud, and all words of encouragement were greatly appreciated. We then had some pizza and reflected on our own educational experiences as well as how Phi Sigma Pi has played a part in who we are and how we got here today. We retired early to prepare for an early wake-up call tomorrow. The excitement is building and you can truly feel that the passion for Phi Sigma Pi and our vision to help reduce the inequalities in education is alive and well within our ABP corps members.

Tomorrow we are set to get a feeling of what KIPP Spark Academy offers its students and get a hands on observation within the classroom. We are all very enthusiastic and know that we will make you proud. More good news is surely to come tomorrow. Until then, take care of yourselves and each other.
