“Howe” #abp2013 Made a Difference

By Krista Kay (Alpha Pi Chapter ‘02, Director of Leadership Advancement)

Our time in Indianapolis has come and gone, but it’s far from over.

During the week, we’ve made some amazing new friends with the faculty, staff, and students of TC Howe, as well as with the staff and corps members at Teach For America Indianapolis. Additionally, we’ve made memories and learned new things that we’ll take back to our respective homes and share with our Chapters.

The excitement of the students, as they rushed to the ping pong table and dove on the bean bag couches, was fun to watch. As they explored the rooms further, it was fulfilling to hear which quotes they liked or what school they would like to attend and why.

Upon seeing the completed resource rooms, the teachers at TC Howe began brainstorming additional uses for the rooms, such as movie days, S.W.A.G. (Students Will Achieve Greatness) Saturdays, after school tutoring, and more! To test out the room, the teachers even used it for their staff meeting.

Once we said goodbye to TC Howe, we capped off the week by joining the Teach For America corps members at the Indianapolis Indians game at Victory Field, as well as taking Saturday to explore the Indianapolis Zoo, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Canal Walk, and more!

Although we’re back home now, the project still continues.

The resource rooms will always need resources. If you’d still like for your university represented, please talk to your admissions or alumni office to see if they can send materials to the following address:

Additionally, TC Howe needs pencils. The Pencils for Potential drive at the 2013 National Convention will support the students and teachers of TC Howe, so don’t forget to bring your pencils!

We’ll miss Indy and TC Howe, but look forward to updates and continuing our support.
