National Convention: A HOBY Perspective

Sunshine Navarro Shively, HOBY’s Registration and Outreach Manager, attended our 2016 National Convention in Kansas City, MO. She wrote about her experience for us.

HOBY Table

HOBY’s Information Table at the 2016 National Convention

From the moment I arrived at the Downtown Kansas City Marriott Hotel, I felt welcomed.  Upon check-in, I received a gift bag with a personalized welcome card from the National Staff and goodies to keep me satiated during Convention.  When I arrived at check-in the following day, everyone I met on Staff was excited to meet me and welcomed me with a hug.  The Members who stopped by the HOBY table were eager to drop off their coins for our penny drive (to sponsor at least one Ambassador from HOBY Missouri) and eager to share their HOBY stories.  If they didn’t have stories to share, they wanted to know how to help.  Their enthusiasm for HOBY was evident and made me feel very welcomed.

I got to see the entire delegation during the Grand Chapter session when Patrick Herron, Vice President of Philanthropy Development, gave a thorough review of year one of the HOBY-Phi Sigma Pi partnership.  The stats were impressive considering that the partnership began in September of 2015, and this initial year was mostly about introducing the organizations to each other’s constituents.

  • 38 new Chapter Members identified as HOBY Alumni in the Spring Semester
  • More than $2,000 donated since the partnership started
  • 16 known HOBY events hosted by Chapters
  • 3 Leadership in Action Lunch & Learns with 70 attendees and 22 Collegiate Chapters and 4 Alumni Organizations represented

The 54th Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony was lovely and befitting of a 100-year anniversary celebration.  I prepared certificates for all the Chapters that supported HOBY through gifts and/or service during this first year of partnership, and I was happy to discover that 21 individual Chapters showed HOBY their support.  The certificates of appreciation read:

PRESENTED TO THE [NAME] CHAPTER OF PHI SIGMA PI NATIONAL HONOR FRATERNITY FOR YOUR DEDICATION TO OUR YOUTH AND YOUR SUPPORT OF HOBY [AFFILIATE NAME].

TOGETHER, WE INSPIRE AND EMPOWER YOUNG PEOPLE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND BECOME CATALYSTS FOR POSITIVE CHANGE.

Not all of the certificates were presented at the banquet, but here is a list of the recipients who will be receiving their acknowledgement in the September Mailing:

  • Alpha Beta Chapter
  • Alpha Epsilon Chapter
  • Alpha Eta Chapter
  • Beta Kappa Chapter
  • Beta Omicron Chapter
  • Beta Phi Chapter
  • Capital Alumni Chapter
  • Delta Alpha Chapter
  • Delta Upsilon Chapter
  • Epsilon Eta Chapter
  • Epsilon Tau Chapter
  • Epsilon Upsilon Chapter
  • Epsilon Zeta Chapter
  • Gamma Beta Chapter
  • Gamma Omicron Chapter
  • Gamma Pi Chapter
  • New York Metro Area Alumni Chapter
  • Phi Sigma Pi National Headquarters
  • Tau Chapter
  • Zeta Delta Chapter
  • Zeta Gamma Chapter

During the Awards Banquet, the result of the Penny Drive was announced.  It was not entirely surprising that we should meet our goal of $350 because I witnessed the generosity of Members who walked by and donated more than pennies; up to $20 bills, in fact.  The final result was an amazing $545 in donations.  However, Patrick Herron and fellow NY Metro Area Alumni Chapter Members offered to match the brothers’ gift up to $350.  Additionally, a generous, anonymous donor offered to match the total gifts up to $700.  This brought the total donation from the convention to $1,595, which allows Phi Sigma Pi to sponsor four Ambassadors for the HOBY Missouri Leadership Seminar.  Outstanding!

I am truly honored to have represented HOBY to an organization whose mission aligns succinctly with our own.  I am also humbled by the warmth and generosity Phi Sigma Pi’s Members, Staff and National Council provided during the week.  As the partnership lead for HOBY, I look forward to the continuous growth and impact our organizations can achieve together.
